9 Ways to Stop Snoring

February 17th, 2009 by admin

Studies show that 40 percent of men and 25 percent of women snore making it quite a common affliction. Even more prone to snoring are the elderly: one-third of people with ages raging from 55 to 84 snores. Its commonplace nature does not, however, lessen the potential gravity of the condition as snoring is a sleep disorder that may have serious medical and social implications.

Here are tips to a more peaceful slumber:

1. Snoring occurs more easily if you lay on your back. Try sleeping on your side. This way your neck, throat and tongue will not be congested and pressed along with each other.

2. Lose that extra weight, especially around the neck, as it stresses the airway, eventually causing it to give way. It isn’t that hard to lose all these excess weight, with constant exercise and discipline, it is not difficult to strengthen those muscles around the neck area.

3. Stay away from tranquilizers and alcohol as they depress the central nervous system and relax throat and jaw muscles, increasing the likeliness of snoring. Stay away from depressants, as much as possible it is advised not to drink a glass of alcohol before bed time. It is also a surprising fact, that milk can also cause snore, as it leaves a mucus level in the throat. So leave the night drinking.

4. Chronic respiratory allergies must be treated. If any symptoms show signs of respiratory allergies, you should seek medical advice; it is always advised to get your doctors prescription.

5. Use a mouth guard. It holds the teeth together and keeps the lower jaw muscles from becoming too lax. This may be too uncommon for others but as suggested mouth guard in one way or another helps.

6. Quit smoking as it damages the respiratory system. Smoking is harmful to our lungs, not only does It harm ourselves but those who we are surrounded with.

7. Get enough sleep and maintain your sleeping pattern. It is always advisable to get at least 8 hours to sleep a day.

8. Pregnant women who snore should see a doctor as they rob the baby of oxygen. This should be given attention too, we not only want welfare to ourselves but to those who are a part of us.

9. Elevate your head when sleeping to take pressure away from the airway. Try the “rolled-towel” trick, it replaces those specially made exorbitant pillows.

These are just some of the many preventive measures we can take in solving our issues with snoring.
